Tales from the unexpected…

I’ve been at home for the last week or so with the horrid flu…. I haven’t really had the strength to do my normal work but at the weekend Rosie asked if we could do a bit of painting with the paints she gave me for Christmas, it seemed easier to just go with it than to protest.

It would be good to tell you at this point that I haven’t done ant real actual PAINTING for years, while the adventure of art college was good in many ways it sadly completely destroyed my confidence when it comes to illustrations with paint so I’ve slowly moved away from it over the years to mediums which allow a bit more surprise & abstraction like printmaking. However with the enthusiasm from my 7 year old daughter we had a little ‘paint off’ & did these pictures of our beloved hens. (Below)

And we both really loved doing it! So as I’ve been straggling about at home I put my time to good use, dragged out a yet unused special sketch book (a gift from my talented artist friend Megan Rose) & set too it!

I chose, as I’m not there, to do my favourite spots around The Lost Gardens of Heligan, this is where I’ve got to so far…

Do you have a favourite place in the gardens that I should be working on next? Suggestions please.

Winter Giveaway.

I’ve spent a day waiting in at home today instead of working at Heligan out there in front of people, its a murky, reflective sort of day & it’s given me the chance to look at & refresh my online stuffs- different social media sites etc. & actually I have to say a great big THANK YOU to you all!

Without me actually shouting about it you have all been supporting, following & commenting with such lovely things to say, I know I don’t always give that sort of thing 100% of my attention, I don’t always get to reply to every comment even though I wish I could, but it all takes up a LOT of time, I do appreciate it & thrive with the positive feedback you give me. To show my appreciation I’ve given a bit of that precious & unexpected time in my day today to make this hand felted Peacock butterfly which I can give to one of you as a giveaway.

It’s just the butterfly, not backed or sewn onto anything… that way I thought you could use it for anything you fancied? It could be turned into a brooch with a pin or hair slide, a little wire to suspend it somewhere? Whatever you fancy. To be in with a chance to win it I need you to help me reacquaint myself with my media sites.. This special unique bit of butterfly shaped wool can be won by someone who follows me on my adventures in each of this exciting places.. Twitter; https://twitter.com/lou_tonkin Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lou-Tonkin-Art-Graft/118577118182463 Instagram; http://instagram.com/loutonkin/ (really bad at this one so far- help!) My blog; http://www.loutonkin.com & my Pinterest thingy; https://www.pinterest.com/loutonkin/ I’m going to have a bit more of this time stuff over the next couple of days to read  & enjoy it

Is there anything else I’ve missed? Anyway, that’s enough to be getting on with. Liking & sharing on my facebook page always helps as well as its been my favourite so far (always did like pictures!) ❤

Thank you again ever so much for your support & I look forward to seeing the shares & comments,

all the best,

I forgot to say…. even though I’ve made a lot in the past, I found this butterfly one of the most extraordinarily satisfying things I’ve ever made- a little bit of perfection on a brooch pin!

If anyone can give me opportunities to make more this year? Magazine articles about it being a new take on an old taxidermy love etc… then I would appreciate it very much xx

Happy New Year to you all.

Happy January & thank you very much for not minding that I’ve neglected my blog by not having written anything for ages! So sorry.

Its been a great start to the year after a wonderfully relaxing Christmas with family & creative friends which was so enjoyed & much needed.

I don’t know about you but I’ve got a really good feeling about 2015, I think it’s going to be a good one, lots of exciting things happening here, positive good will etc.

I raised over £200 for the MND association by chucking myself in the sea on New Years a Day & chopped my hair off for the first time in years!

January for me has been about printmaking which is something so indulgent it feels naughty but hopefully in a couple of weeks I’ll have some more hand printed Lino prints for galleries making it perfectly well behaved really….. my very first prints of the year were decorated more than I had anticipated by the back end of a robin- lucky apparently & I’m still working away at my table at The Lost Gardens of Heligan which is a true joy both for artistic production & socially as we have such a lovely time there together.

One thing I do really need to concentrate on is to try to sort myself out online this year, I’ve just added a couple of items to my Etsy shop for the first time in almost forever & here I am writing a blog so that’s a start? But I’d love a proper website sometime.

I’ll add some pictures for you, sorry to those of you who follow my Facebook page who will have already seen most of them but hopefully they can be enjoyed.

I hope to write more often,

All my love,
